Currency Trading Basics: 3 Reasons to Try a Forex Demo Account

Practice currency trading before committing any of your own money

The FX market is one of the most volatile markets in the world. True, it is extremely liquid, and yes, you can make big profits. However, when you engage in forex trading, you are usually heavily leveraged in one of the more volatile markets there is. A small change in the direction of your position can make a big difference in the outcome. If you do not know what you are doing, this can be a real problem. Here are 3 reasons to use a forex demo account before risking any of your actual money:

  1. Learn the trading platform. Different forex brokers and dealers have different forex trading platforms. Understanding how a trading platform works, and how trades are executed on the FX market is very important. You need to have an idea of what you are doing, and how the whole system works. A forex demo account can help you familiarize yourself with the way a platform works -- and help you decide which platform you are most comfortable with.
  2. Practice makes perfect. Okay, so there is no way to become perfect at currency trading. You are going to lose on some positions. That's just the way the whole thing works. But practice may help you win more than you lose. A forex demo account helps you practice trading currencies so that when you do start risking your own money, your chances of losing large amounts of it -- while still there -- are reduced.
  3. Backtest your forex trading strategy. Even if you are a pro at currency trading, it can be profitable to hit up the forex demo account if you are testing a new strategy. Most demo accounts are reasonably realistic, and you can actually use them to backtest a forex trading strategy. If you are looking to try something new, it can help to give it a trial run in a risk-free, yet realistic environment. Your strategy may not exactly work the same way once you get to the real FX market, but you are less likely to fail big time if you are using a forex trading strategy tested in a demo account.
You should not trade what you don't understand, and a forex demo account can help you hone your currency trading skills before you risk real money.
